How can school promote a sense of community? The art-in-building proposal ‘In Between’ offers various interaction and retreat options in the framework of the design of the IGS Kandel schoolyard. At its core is the school as a community as well as interpersonal interaction: students and teachers learn with and from each other. Symbolic of this concept is the circular shape. Three green islands foster interaction and exchange during the “in-between” moments of school hours, featuring various circularly designed spaces for relaxation, play, reclining, and seating. Lush vegetation surrounding the site-specific elements is an integral part of the concept, enabling a multisensory experience of nature. On the newly emerging schoolyard, the three green islands provide places for relaxation, exchange, and a connection with nature.
