In public space, urban design and strategic building measures are increasingly used to displace certain groups of people and behaviors. In the name of the fictional street furniture company ‘SafeUrban’ Martin Binder develops dystopian products: Ironically exaggerated forms of defensive architecture address and undermine prejudice and discrimination in public space as misanthropic 3D renderings and animations. In a lecture-performance at Futurium Berlin, actor Christian Dieterle presented the street furniture company and its ironic products designed to prevent undesirable behavior in urban spaces. The project was exhibited at ZK/U (Center for Art and Urbanism), among other venues, as part of the exhibition ‘Hacking Urban Furniture’ and appeared in the publication of the same name. On the Instagram page associated with the project, the artist regularly publishes photo and video material that draws attention to defensive architecture and hostile design in public space.
